How Long Does Fence Installation Take?

If you’re looking to install a fence at your Denver area home or business, you’re wondering how long fence installation takes. The answer depends on several factors, but in general, once we have all the materials and the permits in place, we can install your fence in about 3 days.

Let’s take a look at how long the process takes from start to finish.

Scheduling an Estimate

When you contact us to schedule an estimate, we can usually get you on the calendar within 1-3 days. It depends on your schedule and where your property is. We know once you’re scheduling fence installation estimates, you want to get the project moving quickly.

Permitting and Design Approval

If we need a permit to build your fence because of the specific height or location, that can go relatively quickly, but can also face delays, depending on the time of year. Permit offices are busier in the spring and summer months because everyone is doing their outdoor projects.

And if you need to get HOA approval or approval from an architectural review board, it’s the same story. But we can tell you that as soon as you hire us, we will get the process moving forward.

Ordering or Picking Up Materials

If we can easily pick up the materials you need from one of our local vendors, this phase takes just part of a day. But if we need to special order your fencing materials, that can take 5-10 business days, depending on the type of fence and the size of the area to be fenced in.

Once We Have Your Materials and the Permits

Once we have (or are about to have) all the materials we need for your project and all the necessary approvals, we schedule your fence installation. In general, once we arrive at your property, it takes us about 3 days to install your fence and gate(s).

The first day is spent tearing down the old fence (if there is one), digging post holes and installing the fence posts. We come back the next day after the posts have set, and start putting up fence panels or individual pickets, depending on your fence style and materials.

There are a few factors that can speed up or delay your fence installation, including:

  • The size of your property (Larger fences will of course take longer to install).
  • Terrain (If the property slopes, is rocky, we run into tree roots, it can take longer).
  • Complexity of the design (If your fence has custom features, it will take longer to install than a simple fence.)
  • Weather (We try to schedule around the weather, but a sudden rainstorm can delay installation depending on how far along we are.)

We pride ourselves on offering quality fence installation and quick turnarounds for our customers. We would welcome the chance to work with you.

Schedule a Fence Installation Quote

To schedule a fence installation quote, call (720) 418-8194 or use the contact form. In order to give you the most accurate quote, we’ll meet with you at your home or business, do a site evaluation, take measurements, and talk with you about the fence materials you would like to use. If you decide to hire us, we’ll begin the process of ordering materials and getting the necessary permits.

We serve homeowners and commercial clients in the greater Denver area, including Arvada, Golden, Lakewood, Littleton, and Wheat Ridge.

Give Yourself the Gift of a Fence

If you’re struggling for Christmas gift ideas for you and your family, think big. Think about a gift you’ll enjoy for years to come. Think about giving the gift of a new fence installation. If you’ve been thinking about how nice it would be to have a fenced yard, you don’t need to wait for spring or summer.  You can reap the benefits this winter.

The Benefits of a Fenced Yard

There are several key benefits to having a fenced yard. Most homeowners we work with say these are their biggest reasons for having a fence installed:

Security

A fenced yard prevents people and animals from wandering into your backyard, or your front yard if you choose to fence the front. It creates an added barrier for someone who might not have the best intentions.

Safety

If you have children or pets, a fenced yard provides an added layer of safety. They can’t wander off the moment you turn your back, and depending on the type of fence you choose, passersby may not even know they are outside.

Privacy

If you choose a higher privacy fence, you get, you guessed it, privacy. You also block a view you don’t necessarily want to see. Enjoy your backyard without worrying about nosy neighbors.

Increased Property Value

An added bonus is that a fenced yard increases the value of your property if you ever decide to sell your home. For most home buyers, a home with a fence is more valuable and preferable to a similar home without a fenced yard. This is especially true for families with young children or pets, as well as home buyers who like the idea of built-in privacy and security.

Consider Fence Installation this Winter

Since the average temperatures stay above freezing in the Denver area, it is possible to schedule your fence installation for the winter months. As long as we don’t get a ton of snow or a week of frigid temperatures, we can install your fence in the winter. This has several benefits for you:

You Can Avoid the Competition

As soon as the sun begins to warm things up a bit in the springtime, homeowners hit the big box stores and hardware stores to get started on outdoor projects. They also start booking appointments with local contractors. If you’re doing it, so is everyone else. Avoid that springtime competition by scheduling your installation in the winter months.

You Get Your Fence Installed Sooner

Let’s face it. Winter is a slower time for fence contractors and other contractors who work outdoors. You can use this fact to your advantage. Because it’s a slower time for us, you may be able to get an estimate scheduled and get your design approved by the HOA (if you have one) sooner than you would in the summer months.

In addition, it’s easier and faster for us to get any needed permits because the permit offices are not as busy. This means we get your job started sooner, and your installation completed in less time than it would take in the summer.

Fence Contractors Have the Tools and Know-How for Winter Installation

Yes, we know the ground freezes. We can work around that. We have specialized tools and the experience to get the job done right. By using a jack-hammer or auger and a special concrete additive, we can dig post holes deep enough and keep the concrete from freezing until the fence posts are set. Then we can install the rest of your fence.

However, if we get a huge amount of snow or it’s colder than 25 degrees on your scheduled installation date, we’ll need to reschedule. We also will not install your fence when the ground is saturated and muddy, because that’s not conducive to the fence posts setting properly.

You’re Ready for Private Outdoor Living Come Springtime

If you’re tired of nosy neighbors looking into your yard, a winter privacy fence installation makes even more sense. By getting it installed now, you have the privacy you want in the spring, summer, and fall months without waiting weeks for an installation appointment.

Mistakes to Avoid with New Fence Installation

Thinking about putting in a fence? Before you get too far in the process, read about the mistakes to avoid with your fence installation. You’ll be glad you did.

7. Not Talking to Your Neighbors

Maybe you never see your neighbors. Make a point of introducing yourself before you install a fence. It’s the polite thing to do. And depending on where you’re putting your fence, you may need to ask them for their cooperation during installation.

Related Reading: Fence Etiquette 101

6. Not Choosing the Right Fence Materials

Not all fence materials are created equal, and some are easier to install than others. Carefully consider what you want your fence to look like, and if it needs to provide privacy, security, or be decorative in nature. You want to make the right choice to avoid needing to tear down the fence and start over.

5. Failing to Get a Surveyor to Mark Your Property Lines

If your fence is going to go up around the perimeter of your property, you need to hire a surveyor to mark the property lines. You can’t just eyeball it. This way, you avoid putting up the fence on your neighbor’s property or in a municipal easement. If you put the fence in the wrong place, you may face legal action that requires you to tear it down.

4. Failing to Get Utility Lines Marked and Cutting a Utility Line

Call before you dig. Fence post holes have to go pretty deep to stabilize the fence posts. IDig811 is a platform where you can request the various utility companies to come out and mark your property. They may use color-coded flags, spray paint, or both to mark the utility lines. If you fail to get the utilities marked and you dig ad cut a line, you are responsible for the cost of repairs.

3. Failing to Check HOA Rules and Getting HOA Approval

This one applies only if you belong to a Homeowners’ Association (HOA.) Many HOAs regulate the height of your fence, the fence materials, and the fence color. Putting up a fence that doesn’t meet the rules can result in you having to tear the fence down. Get approval of your fence before installing it and save yourself the trouble.

2. Failing to Get the Proper Permits and Checking Local Ordinances

Depending on where you want to build your fence and how high you want the fence to be, you will need a permit. Play it safe, and check with your city or municipality to see what ordinances they have regarding fence installation, and get a permit if you need one. Again, failing to get a permit if one is required, and ignoring local ordinances can result in you having to tear the fence out.

A reputable fence company will take care of getting the utility lines marked and pulling the proper permits. They can refer you to a surveyor you can hire to mark property lines. Top 5 Benefits of a Privacy Fence

If you’re thinking about putting in a fence to enclose your back yard, a privacy fence has many benefits you won’t get with an open picket fence or ornamental fence. Each of those types of fences have their place, but today we’re going to discuss the benefits of a privacy fence.

Let’s get started.

1.     Privacy

As the name implies, a privacy fence provides privacy from neighbors and people passing by. A privacy fence is taller (6 ft. and up) and the fence boards or panels are very close together or solid. You don’t have to worry about someone watching your every move when you go into the backyard.

2.     Child Safety

If you have children, a privacy fence provides an added level of safety for your children. It’s a solid fence, so small children can’t squeeze through to chase after a bunny rabbit or ball. The solid nature of the fence also prevents someone driving by from seeing your child out playing.

3.     Dog Safety

If you have one or more dogs, a privacy fence also prevents your dog from running into the street or wandering into a neighbor’s yard where they are most unwelcome. When they’re really excited or scared, those hidden pet fences won’t stop a dog from running. A solid privacy fence will.

4.     Improves Your Back Yard

A privacy fence also improves the look of your back yard by creating a secluded hideaway. You’ll use your backyard more due to reason #1. You can also use the fence as a backdrop for landscaping – climbing vines, flowers, shrubs, and more will be sheltered from the wind.

5.     Increases Property Value

Last but not least, a privacy fence increases your property value if you decide to sell your home. Potential buyers with children and pets often have a fenced back yard on their list of “must-haves” when they’re looking for a home to buy. Other buyers will appreciate the built-in privacy the fence provides.

You’ll get a higher asking price than you would if you didn’t have a privacy fence. You will also set your property apart from others in the area that do not have fences.

Professional Fence Installation Increases Home Value

Are you thinking about professional fence installation? Wondering what type of fence to put in? Wondering if you need professional installation or if you can do it yourself? Like most home improvements, putting in a fence will increase your home’s value, if you do it right. Let’s take a look at the 3 main ways a fence can increase your property value.

1. Enhances Your Enjoyment of Your Home

The first way putting in a fence increases your home’s value is that it increases your enjoyment of your home. A privacy fence allows you to enjoy your backyard without worrying about the neighbors watching. A fence also helps you stop worrying that your pets or young children might wander off the moment you take your eyes off of them.

Privacy and stress relief? Priceless.

2. Enhances Curb Appeal

Professional fence installation will enhance your home’s curb appeal. This is true whether it’s a low front yard fence or a backyard fence. A fence frames your home and can highlight architectural qualities or landscaping.

This increases your pride in ownership. And who doesn’t love it when someone tells you what a beautiful home you have?

3. Enhances Resale Value

For most home buyers, a home with a fence is more valuable and preferable to a similar home without a fenced yard. This is especially true for families with young children or pets, as well as home buyers who like the idea of built-in privacy and security.

Realtors make a point of mentioning a fenced yard in MLS listings, because they know that’s a major selling point for a lot of people. It may give you an edge over similar homes if you do decide to sell your home.

There are a few caveats to a fence increasing the resale value of your home.

  • Materials matter. A rusty old chain link fence may be a turnoff for a would-be buyer. Steel ornamental, cedar, and vinyl fences will all enhance the resale value.
  • The fence needs to be professionally installed. A shoddy fence installation will not increase the value as much, if at all.
  • It must be in good repair. If a fence is leaning or missing planks or pickets, it will be a sign that you don’t take good care of your home. Arrange for fence repair before you list your home.

With all of this being said, don’t install a fence just because you think it will increase resale value. Install it because you want the benefits it will provide you, your family, and your pets.

Types of Commercial Fencing and How to Choose

As a business owner or facilities manager, you need to keep your premises secure from intruders. But you also need to consider curb appeal and what “look” will convey the message you want to send to prospective customers and random passers-by.

Whether you’re installing commercial fencing for the first time, or you’re replacing an old fence, you’ll need to do some research to help you decide what type of fence material to use. We’ve put together some information to help you make an informed choice.

The most popular types of commercial fencing include:

  • Chain Link Fencing
  • Steel Ornamental Fencing
  • Vinyl Fencing
  • Trex® Fencing
  • Cedar Fence

Let’s look at the options a little more closely, and where they best fit in.

Chain Link Fence

Chain link fence is the most economical type of commercial fence there is. It’s one of the oldest types of fencing as well. But today’s chain link fence is not the dull grey fence you remember from the baseball diamond of your childhood.

Today’s chain link is available in several colors, thanks to vinyl coating technology. Black, green, brown, tan, and white are the most common colors. The vinyl coating not only improves the look of the fence, but it helps prevent rust. You can also add privacy slats to chain link if you need to block the view.

Chain link fence is most common in commercial and industrial applications where the curb appeal of the fence is not as important as security and economy. A chain link perimeter fence may also have razor wire on top as an added security measure to keep intruders out.

Steel Ornamental Fencing

On the opposite side of the spectrum, steel ornamental fencing is all about curb appeal. This low-maintenance fence is more expensive than chain link, but it gives off an upscale look. It allows people to see into your property, and for people on your property to see out.

It has the look of wrought iron, but is less expensive and doesn’t require the maintenance that wrought iron does. Steel ornamental fencing is powder coated, resists rust, and comes in a wide variety of styles. It is also compatible with automatic gates.

Ornamental fencing is a good choice for restaurants with outdoor dining, hotels with outdoor pools, senior living communities, cemeteries, and golf courses, just to name a few locations.

Vinyl Fencing

While you can see through chain link and steel ornamental fencing, vinyl fencing very versatile. It’s typically a solid fence, but it’s also available in decorative, open-picket styles as well as post & rail styles. Available in a number of heights, it can be a low fence around a garden area, or a taller privacy fence that encloses an area you don’t wish to be visible to passersby.

You can also use vinyl privacy fence to block out an unpleasant view. For instance, an apartment complex with a view of train tracks might put a fence at the edge of a parking lot. This protects children and helps block the view and some of the noise as well.

Vinyl fencing is also low-maintenance and won’t rot or need repainting.

Trex® Fencing

Trex® Fencing is made by the same company that makes composite decking. It is eco-friendly fencing made from recycled wood and recycled plastic. Using Trex® fencing can contribute to your LEED points, as well. It has the look of a wood fence without the risk of rotting, warping, or splinters. It also never needs to be repainted. In addition, this fencing material has all of the benefits of a vinyl privacy fence without the carbon footprint.

While you might think of Trex® fencing as primarily a residential fence, it is very popular in commercial and government projects. It is also strong enough to withstand the high winds we can sometimes get in Colorado.

Cedar Fence

Last but not least is cedar fence. A cedar fence is several steps up from a pressure-treated lumber fence, and provides a rustic or modern look to your property, depending on the style of fence you chose. It can be low-maintenance if you choose to let it weather to its natural silvery-grey color. Otherwise, you will need to seal it every few years.

A cedar fence might be a good option for a resort, retreat, spa, farm market, or any commercial property looking for a more natural look.

Commercial Gate Installation You Can Count On

As a Denver metro area property manager, facilities manager, or farmer, you know the value of a good fence with an easy-to-operate gate or gates. If you have an old gate that you’re looking to upgrade for aesthetics or security purposes, you’re in the right place. We provide commercial gate installation for our commercial clients and offer repair services as well.

You may want to replace your existing gate with the same kind. Or you may be interested in learning what your options are. So today, we will go over some of the types of commercial gates to help you decide what’s best for your business, facility, or property.

Keep in mind that the larger the gate, the more likely it is that you will want to have an automatic gate system, where a motorized gate operator takes care of opening and closing the gate. When we come for a site visit, we can go over all of these options and make recommendations.

You can get most of these types of gates in just about any material to match your existing fence. Depending on your budget, some manufacturers can also build custom gates with your logo and custom decorative features. We provide expert commercial gate installation using gates from leading manufacturers.

Swing Gates

A swing gate is the type of gate most of us are familiar with from residential applications. In a commercial setting, you may have one swing gate or a pair of swing gates that open on the left and right. Swing gates are common gates for driveway gates at gated communities, assisted living facilities, farms, wineries, and other businesses accessed by a driveway or vehicle path.

Cantilever / Sliding Gates

Sliding gates slide open using wheels and a track in the pavement, or in the cantilever configuration, the gate moves on rollers that run along the top side of the gate. Cantilever gates can be used in uneven terrain as well as gravel.

Vertical Lift Gates

Vertical lift gates don’t require any space to the sides beyond the size of the gate, so are a good solution where space is at a premium. The gate lifts vertically to allow entry and then closes in a downward fashion via a hydraulics system.  Vertical lift gates are highly secure and might be the commercial gate of choice for industrial facilities, correctional facilities, and military bases.

Pedestrian Swing Gates

Pedestrian swing gates for commercial facilities are essentially the same gates used in residential applications. Locking mechanism options include:

  • Electro-mechanical lock
  • Panic bar
  • Mag-lock
  • Mortise lock
  • Keypad lock
  • Padlock

Pedestrian Turnstiles

While traditional commercial gates limit vehicular traffic, pedestrian turnstiles control people traffic. They can help limit access when you have long lines of people, such as you might have at theme parks, water parks, and mass transit stations. They can be waist high or full height.

Commercial Automatic Gate Openers

Depending on your business and the size and type of your gate(s), you may need an automatic gate opener or gate operator. We can help you determine what automatic gate system will work best for your needs and budget.

Some options include:

  • A manned gate with personnel who buzz the gate open
  • Gate operators with card readers
  • Gate operators with numeric keypads
  • Motion-activated gate openers

We install automatic gate openers compatible with your gate and offer service and repair as needed.

Top Privacy Fence Ideas for Your Denver Area Home

Top Privacy Fence Ideas for Your Denver Area Home

If your home is your castle, then your backyard represents the palace grounds. You want to be able to enjoy outdoor entertaining and have a place for your kids to play that’s protected from the prying eyes of neighbors and anyone just walking by.

You’re not alone. More and more homeowners in the Denver area are opting to install a privacy fence. Just Google “privacy fence ideas” and you’ll see an amazing variety of options for these solid fences. They enclose your yard and give you – yes – privacy. But they give your yard curb appeal and help you express your artistic side as well.

The most common options are:

  • Wood privacy fence
  • Vinyl privacy fence
  • Trex® privacy fence

Once you select a material, you’ll want to decide on color, a mix of materials, and whether you want a vertical or horizontal privacy fence. In general, a vertical fence gives a more traditional look, while a horizontal privacy fence gives off a contemporary vibe.

Again, Google is your friend. Those images that popped up when you searched for privacy fence ideas are all real fence projects and ones that we can duplicate.

Privacy Fence Height

In addition to being pretty solid with no large gaps like you would see with steel ornamental fencing or split-rail fencing, privacy fencing is also tall. The standard height is 6’. Tall enough so many people can’t see over, or just the top of their head would be visible.

But privacy fence panels and pickets are also available in 7’ and 8’ heights. Which height brings your privacy fence ideas to life will depend on your aesthetics and local restrictions.

Add a Lattice Fence Topper for Privacy

For added privacy with flair and a view, consider adding a lattice fence topper. You’ve seen pictures of them, or maybe even seen a fence in your neighborhood with one. You have your standard solid privacy fence, and then the topper attaches to the top, adding one foot to the height of the fence. But since it’s lattice, you can see through to the other side.

A lot of our clients choose to install a 6’ privacy fence and add a lattice topper for visual appeal at the time of their fence installation.  If you have an existing privacy fence, adding a topper could be a DIY project if you have the time and the right tools. If you need help, give us a call. We may be able to fit you into our schedule.

Add Plant Material

When you search for images of privacy fence ideas, you’re also likely to see pictures of fences with attached pergolas with vining plants, as well as people who have turned a portion of their fence into a living wall by adding plant shelves and pots.

Depending on how close your fence is to your property line, you can also plant small trees on the outside of the fence, or on the inside, to add additional height. Keep your landscaping and living wall ideas in mind when you choose your fence material, and decide how close to your property lines to install it.

Follow the Rules and Regulations

Whatever you do, before you spend any money on your privacy fence ideas, make sure the fence height you want complies with your HOA rules as well as local regulations. This is another reason it’s a good idea to work with a professional fence company. They know when and where to go to get the correct permits, all the ins and outs of property line setbacks, and more.

The last thing you want to do is hire a handyman or a fly-by-night contractor who puts up a fence in the wrong place, or one that’s too high, or doesn’t get the right permits. Doing any of these can result in you paying to have your new fence torn out. And that would be a shame.

Got some privacy fence ideas you want to turn into reality? We can help. To get a privacy fence installation quote, set up a consultation using the contact form or call (720) 418-8194. If you’re not sure what height or type of fencing to install at your home or business, we can give you multiple quotes using multiple fence materials.

Why Spring Is a Great Time for Fence Installation

Why Spring is a Great Time for Fence Installation

While we can’t rule out another snowfall for the Denver area in April, the calendar says winter is over and spring is here. For most of us, that means getting outside more without the need to bundle up or put on snow boots. For those of us in the fence installation business, April means the ground is no longer frozen. That’s the #1 reason we think spring is a great time to put up a new fence. It takes less effort to dig the post holes!

But let’s take a look at why it’s a great time for you as a homeowner or business owner.

Reason #1: The Weather

By this, we don’t just mean the ground isn’t frozen anymore. When the weather warms up, you’re ready to get outside, clean up the property, and spruce things up a bit. Adding a new fence or replacing a dilapidated fence can be part of your spring landscaping projects or outdoor dining expansion. Whatever the reason you install it, a new fence will enhance curb appeal for your home or business.

Reason #2: You Beat the Crowd

Summer is the busiest time for fencing contractors because everyone has the same idea – “Let’s build a privacy fence!” Get ahead of the rush by scheduling your fence installation now. Not only will fence contractors have more room in their schedule than they would in the summer, but the permitting offices won’t be as busy yet either.

Reason #3: You’ll Enjoy the Benefits Sooner

Remember when we talked about getting outside more as the weather warms up? With your new fence, you’ll know your pets and children are safe and secure and can’t wander off the moment your back is turned. You’ll also have privacy for your backyard cookouts – no need to worry about nosy neighbors.

And, your beautiful new fence will be the envy of your neighbors. They’ll ask you who installed it and may even ask you what it cost. It’s up to you if you tell them that second part.

Reason #4: Your Landscaping Will Recover Faster

By scheduling your fence installation for springtime, you give your lawn, flowers, and shrubs a chance to recover or get off to a good start before the hotter temperatures of summer. It’s hard to get newly seeded grass to do as well in the summer as it can do in the spring months.

So there you have it. The reasons that spring is such a good time for fence installation. We welcome you to browse our website to learn more about the various types of fencing materials and determine which one is right for your home or business.

What Type of Fencing Is Best?

What Type of Fencing Is Best for My Home or Business?

This is a question with no simple answer. No two customers will think exactly alike. It all depends on what you want and need a fence for, what you want it to look like, and what your budget is.

There are two main things to consider: types of fencing materials, and types of fences. Keep in mind your budget and aesthetics as you read through your options.

Types of Fencing Materials

We’ll discuss the types of fencing materials we use in fence installation. These include:

Cedar Fence

Cedar fence gives a classic look to your home or upscale business. It can also give a rustic look, depending on the style of fence panels and whether you choose to let it age to its natural silvery grey color. Unlike other, cheaper wood fences, a cedar fence resists rotting and can stand up to harsh sunlight.

Trex® Fencing

Trex® fencing gives you the look of wood without the potential for rotting, splintering, or maintenance such as painting or staining. It is an excellent solution for those seeking a privacy fence that looks great and meets HOA standards.

Steel Ornamental Fence

Steel ornamental fence lives up to its name – ornamental. It is designed to look good, and make your residential or commercial property look good to someone passing by. If you want privacy, this is not the fence for you. But if you need a fence to keep the kids and pets in or to showcase your property, it can be a good, no-maintenance option.

Vinyl Fence

Vinyl fence can be a good solution for both shorter garden fences and privacy fence. Some homeowners use it as pool fence, as well. It can give an upscale look to a commercial property where privacy is important, such as around a hotel pool or patio area. Vinyl is also low maintenance, and just may need hosing down once in a while,

Chain Link Fence

Chain link fence is a very cost-effective solution if you have to fence in a large area. We see it most commonly in commercial and industrial applications, such as around warehouse properties, industrial complexes, etc. Homeowners might use it for a dog run or for another smaller area where what the fence looks like is not as important as how it functions.

Types of Fences

By types of fences, we mean taller fences such as privacy fences, or shorter picket fences. These are sometimes referred to as fence styles. Then within each of those categories, you can choose among:

  • Picket, plank, or panel styles
    • Dog ear, scallop, flat top, Gothic, lattice top, shadow box, rail, and more
  • Color (in some cases)

You may be limited in the fence material, style, and color you can install at your home or business, based on your HOA or commercial district regulations. But if you want a privacy fence, you will want to go with a cedar, Trex®, or vinyl fence. If you want to showcase your property and just have a physical barrier, a steel ornamental fence might be a good option. And if you just need a shorter fence to frame your front yard, you can use any kind of material or style.

Fence Gates

Your fence gate will be the same material and style of your fence. But you still have many options regarding whether you want a double gate, an automatic gate, or other feature. How far you venture from the basic gate will increase the cost of the gate itself.
