10 Questions to Ask Fence Contractors Before Hiring One

If you need to replace a deteriorating fence or you’re planning on putting in a privacy fence, you’re smart to do your homework. While you want to get the best price you can, you also want to hire experienced fence contractors with a good reputation.

Below, we’ve put together a list of the top 10 questions to ask fence contractors before hiring one to build your fence.

1. Are you registered, bonded, and insured?

Any fence company you talk to should answer with a yes, and be able to provide you with written proof. Beware of trying to save a few bucks by going with a handyman for your project. They may cut corners and if they’re injured on the job, you might be responsible for their medical bills.

The state of Colorado does not require fence contractors to be licensed, but they must register their business with the state. Various cities and municipalities will have additional requirements.

2. How long have you been in business?

Look for a company that has been in business for at least 5 years – the longer, the better. Companies that do shoddy work and have lousy customer service don’t last long. You may be able to find this information on their Google Business Profile or their website.

3. What types of fences do you install?

Most fence contractors can install any type of fence you want, using the materials you want. However, some may not install wrought iron. Look through their website to see if they mention the types of fencing materials you’re interested in. Look through their portfolio or gallery as well to see examples of finished projects.

4. Do I need a permit?

The answer to this question will depend on where you live, and the height of your fence. For example, the city of Denver has some pretty specific fence regulations you need to be aware of. Your fence company can help you get the required permit.

If you belong to an HOA, you will also need to have them review and approve your fence installation project. You may be limited to certain types of fence material, as well as fence height and fence color.

5. Do I need a survey?

If you have a very large property and you’re just putting up a fence around part of the backyard to have a secure area for your children and pets to be outside, then probably not. But if you’re putting a fence around the perimeter of your property, we would highly recommend hiring a surveyor to mark the property lines.

The last thing you want to do is install a fence that turns out to be partially on a neighboring property or in a municipal easement. You might be required to tear it down at your own expense.

6. How long does fence installation take and when can you start?

The answer to this question will vary depending on the time of year and the individual fence contractor. In general, once all the permits are in place and the materials have arrived, Denver Fence Company can install your fence in 2-3 days.

The specific timeframe will depend on whether we are tearing down an old fence, the size and scope of the project, the fence materials, and other factors. The best way to get a straight answer is to schedule a quote.

7. How much does fence installation cost?

This is a fair question to ask the fence contractors you schedule to do a quote. Be sure to have them break down the labor and materials costs. Materials costs should be relatively the same from one contractor to another. If they’re not, ask why.

A substantially lower cost from one fence company may mean they are using substandard materials. Some bigger companies may quote a higher price because they have higher overhead costs.

Ultimately, the cost of fence installation should not be the only deciding factor in who you choose to hire. Think about your desired time frame, who was most responsive, and other factors.

8. How do I pay?

This may vary from one fence installer to another based on the size and scope of the job and the fence material(s) in question. In general, for larger and more expensive jobs, you can expect to pay a deposit upfront. This might be up to 1/3 of the total cost. All of the payment details should be clearly listed in any fence installation contract you sign.

9. Do you have references?

Reputable fence contractors should answer with a resounding yes. They can provide you with contact information from previous clients who have agreed to be references. You can also learn about a company’s work and customer satisfaction by reading their online reviews.

10. How are you different from the other fence companies?

This question gives fence contractors a chance to tell you about their decades of experience, continuing education, or the fact that the company is veteran-owned and operated (as is the case with Denver Fence Company). It’s also a chance for you to follow up and ask if they use subcontractors. You’re better off with a company that has its own employees, as they are generally more dependable and trustworthy.
